One of the most important parts of your car, the transmission, is also one of the most misunderstood areas of car ownership. With the rampant misinformation available on the internet, it is easy for inexperienced car owners to fall for the myths, leading to more money out of their wallets and even damage to their cars. Aside from knowing that a bad transmission is, well, bad, all car owners can benefit from understanding which transmission tips are fact and which are fiction. Check out these four common transmission myths to stop believing today!
Myth 1: All Transmission Fluids are the Same
Contrary to the myth, there isn't a universal transmission fluid that works in every vehicle. Car manufacturers create special transmission fluid blends specifically for their vehicles, so we recommend using their suggested fluid blend. You can find this information in your owner's manual.
Myth 2: Transmission Flushes Clean the Transmission Filter
Flushing your transmission removes debris and old fluids, but it does not clean the filter. The transmission filter needs to be replaced, so make sure to have a professional look at it during regular maintenance.
Myth 3: Material in the Transmission Pan Means the Transmission is Failing
When your transmission is running normally, it's not uncommon to find very fine metallic powder deposits in your transmission pan. You should only be concerned if there are large shavings or chunks, which can indicate a far more serious need, like a full transmission rebuild.
Myth 4: Shops that Perform Transmission Flushes can Handle All Transmission Issues
Your car's transmission is a complex and intricate part of your car. While most auto repair shops can perform transmission flushes, only an experienced transmission technician can accurately identify and repair more complicated issues.
