Checking your car's fluids is more than just a line item on your car maintenance checklist. Making sure your car's oil and transmission fluids are clean and at the right level makes your car more reliable and significantly reduces the risk of costly repairs and malfunctions. Whether you're new to checking your car's transmission fluid or you want some tips to make the process easier, follow these helpful guidelines.
Check the Color and Consistency
Car transmission fluid can change color and thicken as it's nearing the end of its lifespan. As you check it, wipe the dipstick against a paper towel and pay attention to the color and thickness:
- Dark and brick red: These colors indicate the fluid is new or still in great shape.
- Rusty red, black, or with black flecks: This indicates it's time for new fluid.
- Thicker than motor oil: As transmission fluid ages, it becomes more viscous. Replace it with thinner new fluid to keep it flowing smoothly.
Check Transmission Fluid When the Engine is Warm
The best time to check your transmission fluid is when your car engine is warm. Be careful when opening the hood to avoid touching the engine or other components directly—only handle the lid to the transmission fluid.
Carefully Replace Transmission Fluid Without Underfilling or Overfilling
When your transmission fluid levels are low, you can add more yourself or take it to a mechanic. The dipstick will indicate if the available fluid is at a "full" or "add" level. Add small amounts in increments so you can check that you aren't overfilling the system.
Know When it's Time for a Transmission Fluid Flush
As a general rule, you should have your car's transmission fluid flushed every 30,000 miles. Schedule a flush appointment if you notice a burning smell coming from the transmission or if your car has difficulty changing gears.
