7 Fun Facts About Your Car's AC System

As temperatures rise, it’s the perfect time to uncover some cool facts about your vehicle’s air conditioning system. Keep reading to discover seven helpful facts about your car’s ac system.

1. Your Car Recycles Air

While you may want the car to cycle air and keep it cool, keep in mind that this air isn't filtering out. For longer rides and commutes, this could be a health issue, since the air quality diminishes. After about 20 minutes, it's a good idea to let the air circulate with the outside air for a while and get some fresh air going through the vehicle.

2. Your AC Filter Can Get Clogged

It isn't something you might think of with the AC system, but each AC system has a filter. It's a good idea to have this filter replaced, or you'll start to notice unwanted smells from the bacteria build-up. This can also harbor unhealthy air quality in the cabin of your car.

3. Your AC Still Runs on Defrost

One of the coolest things that you might not know about your AC system is that it's still running even in defrost mode. It is being used as a dehumidifier so that your windows and windshield will clear up and you can drive safely.

4. Don't Top Off the Refrigerant

While you've probably always heard that you should top off this fluid in your AC system, this can be harmful as you can't really be sure how much coolant is already in your car. If you add too much to the system, it can overcharge and cause a lot of expensive damage to the system.

5. Your AC System is Leaking and That's Normal

Every AC system will have some leaking and runoff from the system running, so don't panic. If you're idling with the car parked, you may notice a trail of water coming from beneath the car. This is normal and nothing to be concerned about.

6. Make Sure Your Hybrid Has the Right Oil

What many car owners don't realize is that their hybrid models require a special type of oil for their AC unit. Because of the various electrical components beneath the hood, they need an oil that is non-conductive so that the hybrid runs safely and efficiently.

7. There are Actually Two Fluids in Your AC System

While you may be familiar with the refrigerant for your AC system, the system also needs air conditioning oil in order to function properly. AC oil helps to reduce friction and prevent wear, allowing the ac unit to run smoothly.
