5 Signs You are Due for a Brake Fluid Flush

As a car owner, it's essential to keep your brake fluid clean and at optimal levels so your braking system continues operating correctly. If you aren't sure if you need a brake fluid flush, check out these five signs below to see if you need to take your car in to your local auto repair shop.

1. Black Brake Fluid

Over time, the brake fluid in your car will start to break down because it is exposed to debris and contamination. If your brake fluid is starting to turn black when you check it, the breakdown process has started, and it isn't properly filtering anymore.

2. Soft Brake Pedal

If you're trying to press the brakes in your car but notice they feel almost spongy or soft, then you have another sign that the brake fluid needs to be flushed. The pressure the fluid is supposed to provide to the braking system is no longer working properly, and air is trapped in the lines. This can be dangerous and a sure sign to bring in your car.

3. Brake Light is On

When you crank up your car, your dashboard will light up if you have any issues in the system. If the braking system isn't getting the correct pressure or is being clogged from debris, your brake system light will come on, indicating you need maintenance.

4. Unusual Noises or Smells

When you press your brakes, if you notice a new sound or smell something after using them, that could be a sign that your car is due for a brake fluid flush. Squealing sounds and a burning odor are typical telltale signs.

5. Ineffective Brakes

When you hit your brakes, they should maintain safety and allow you to stop. If you notice that it's taking longer to stop when you use the brakes, you may need a brake fluid flush or have the whole system looked over.
