When the fuel injection pump in your diesel car, truck, or SUV fails, the engine doesn't receive the fuel it needs to run and shuts down. In order to avoid your car stopping and refusing to go further, keep reading to familiarize yourself with the common causes of a diesel fuel injection pump failure.
1. Contaminated Diesel Fuel
Water, oil, and other debris in contaminated diesel fuel can damage both your fuel pump and the fuel injector. A mechanic will need to clean out both the fuel pump and the injectors to get your vehicle running again. This is done using high-pressure equipment.
2. Empty Fuel Tank
Even when you're low on fuel, you might be damaging your fuel injection pump. In the place of fuel, air is pumped through the fuel injection system, causing the fuel pump bearings to wear out.
3. Dirty Fuel Injector
Over the years, your vehicle's fuel injectors get dirty as dirt and debris move through the system. When this occurs, fuel isn't able to make its way to the engine, and the pump fails. The injectors need to be cleaned or replaced on a regular basis.
4. Faulty Timing
When the individual injector's timing isn't synchronized correctly, it will misfire and cause the system to lose power. A timing issue with your fuel injectors can do more than cause the pump to fail, it can also cause damage to your engine. You'll need a mechanic to get the timing back in sync.
